A Green Legacy

‘Discovery Day’ is an opportunity for people in all phases of their career to come together and share in their passion and knowledge of the natural world.

Firstly experts were invited to attend and give a talk about their area of expertise. The focus this year was on innovative technologies, and how we can use them to improve and protect conservation efforts in the future.

‘What is the legacy we are all going to leave on this planet?’ – Mike Fitt OBE

Since the first ‘Discovery Day’ the event has grown and now it attracts around 300 people from across the UK in this sector.

Panelists spoke about the advances in various exciting projects, such as biodiversity monitoring and vertical greening solutions. Naturally we’re delighted that the Royal Parks Guild asked Tom to talk about Fytocell and its potential in horticulture.

Why is innovation important to the sector? Its because there's so much new and exciting technology; which is helping us with mapping, which is helping us with looking at seeds and how they grow. It really is the future. - Sarah Lom, CEO Tree Council

Why use Fytocell?

Fytocell flakes are a very versatile product. Instead of soil we can use it as a substitute to grow plants, or in hydroponic systems. We can also easily combine it with other substrates or in the topsoil at a smaller percentage.

By mixing Fytocell with the soil it will restore the ratio of water and air in the media. This provides a better growing environment for the plants and can be especially beneficial in peat free areas.

Another key feature of Fytocell is its capacity to retain water. As a result stress on the plant is reduced which promotes better root development and plant growth. Besides improving the plant, this will save water because less time needs to be spent regularly watering.

The Future of Horticulture

During the first half of the day industry professionals gave presentations to school children and apprentices. After this groups discussed their career opportunities and how they could directly impact the future of horticulture.

‘Show young people who are entering the profession that it is really worthwhile’ – Ruth Lin Wong Holmes, Vice Chair, Royal Parks Guild

We think encouraging people to engage with the natural world is a vital step towards protecting the future of horticulture and conservation. Fortunately there are many ways to be involved from education to developing new technology.
